What You Will Learn

  • Purpose: PLAB Part 1 evaluates the candidate's knowledge and understanding of common medical conditions, as well as the principles and practice of medicine relevant to the UK health system. It assesses theoretical knowledge in various medical disciplines, including anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, and clinical reasoning.

  • Syllabus: The exam covers a broad range of topics typically studied during undergraduate medical education. Candidates are expected to have a comprehensive understanding of basic medical sciences, clinical medicine, and their application in clinical practice. The General Medical Council (GMC) provides a detailed syllabus outlining the topics and areas covered in the exam.

  • Scoring and Passing: The passing score for PLAB Part 1 is determined through a standard-setting process. Candidates receive their results approximately three weeks after taking the exam. Those who achieve a passing score can proceed to PLAB Part 2, which assesses clinical skills and competencies through objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs).

  • Format: PLAB Part 1 is a written examination consisting of multiple-choice questions (MCQs). As of my last update, there are 180 single best answer (SBA) questions, each with four options, of which only one is correct. The exam is conducted over a duration of 3 hours.

  • Preparation: Preparation for PLAB Part 1 usually involves extensive study using textbooks, online resources, question banks, and review courses tailored for the exam. Candidates are advised to allocate sufficient time for study and revision, familiarize themselves with the exam format, and practice answering MCQs under timed conditions. It's essential to focus on understanding concepts rather than rote memorization.

  • Retakes: Candidates who do not pass PLAB Part 1 can retake the exam. There are no limits to the number of attempts allowed, but candidates must wait at least 28 days before retaking the exam.

PLAB (Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board) Part 1 is an assessment for international medical graduates who wish to practice medicine in the United Kingdom. It is one of the steps in the PLAB exam series, which is designed to assess the medical knowledge and skills of doctors who have qualified overseas. Here's a brief overview of PLAB Part 1:
